Abel & Cole review: organic veg boxes and groceries
Our rating: 4/5 — a strong organic all-rounder if you want a veg box plus a full organic grocery shop, with recipe kits on the side.
A note on what Abel & Cole is
Like Riverford, Abel & Cole is primarily an organic veg-box and grocery service rather than a fixed recipe kit — you can order seasonal veg, a wide organic grocery range, and add recipe boxes on top. It doesn't publish a weekly menu of individual dinners, so we don't list Abel & Cole meals on our weekly menu pages. It's the organic, do-your-shop-too option next to the recipe-kit brands.
What we like
- Certified organic. Veg boxes, recipe kits and groceries are all organic, with good seasonal quality.
- Do your whole organic shop. Beyond veg, there's a full range — dairy, store cupboard, household — so it can replace more than just dinners.
- Packaging you return. Plastic-light and built around returnable, reused packaging.
What could be better
- Not a fixed recipe menu. If you specifically want to pick set dinners each week, a dedicated recipe kit gives you more of that browse-and-choose experience.
- Price. Organic across the board means it sits above conventional meal kits.
- Gluten-free. No per-meal gluten-free menu is published, so we don't mark any items GF — check individual product allergen info on their own site.

Reviewers praise
- UK's original organic food delivery company (founded 1988) — full organic certification, minimal plastic, and returnable packaging options.
- Widest range of organic extras and add-ons of any box service — customers can do a near-full weekly shop including meat, dairy, bakery, and pantry items.
- Highly customisable boxes — items can be swapped for alternatives; well-structured recipe cards for 30–45 minute prep meals.
Common gripes
- One of the most expensive organic food delivery services in the UK; premium pricing not suited to budget shoppers.
- Limited delivery slot flexibility and occasional timing issues reported by customers.
- Ingredients in recipe boxes not pre-sorted by individual recipe — customers must organise them before cooking.
