Riverford review: organic veg and recipe boxes, done ethically
Our rating: 4/5 — the pick for certified-organic produce and ethics, if you want a veg box as much as a recipe kit.
A note on what Riverford is
Unlike HelloFresh or Gousto, Riverford is first and foremost an organic veg-box service — you can order seasonal veg on its own, or add recipe boxes on top. So it doesn't publish a fixed weekly "menu" of individual dinners the way the recipe-kit brands do, which is why we don't list Riverford meals on our weekly menu pages. Think of it as the organic, seasonal alternative rather than a like-for-like meal kit.
What we like
- Certified organic. Everything is organic and strongly seasonal — the produce quality is a clear step up from conventional boxes.
- Ethics built in. Riverford is an employee-owned B Corp with a genuinely strong environmental and fair-dealing record.
- Flexible. Veg-only boxes, fruit, dairy, meat and recipe boxes — you build what suits your household and skip weeks freely.
What could be better
- Not a fixed recipe menu. If you want to browse and pick specific dinners each week, a dedicated recipe kit (Gousto, HelloFresh) gives you more of that.
- Price. Organic and ethical comes at a premium over mainstream meal kits.
- Gluten-free. Riverford doesn't publish a per-meal gluten-free menu, so we don't mark any items GF. Check individual product allergen info on their own site.

Trustpilot ≈ 4.8/5 from ~20,535 reviews (indicative — see the live score)
Riverford holds the highest Trustpilot score in this review set (4.8/5 from over 20,000 reviews) and is the only 100% employee-owned operator among the nine brands, with a B Corp score (124.6) among the highest recorded by a UK food company at the time of certification. Free delivery on all orders is a meaningful differentiator against competitors that charge £4–£6 per box.
Reviewers praise
- Highest Trustpilot score in this review set (4.8/5 from 20,000+ reviews); produce quality consistently described as noticeably superior to supermarket alternatives with no spoiled ingredients reported.
- 100% employee-owned cooperative (since June 2018); certified B Corp with a score of 124.6 — the second-highest of any UK food company at certification; committed to UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Common gripes
- Higher price point than mainstream kits — £12.75–£17.95 per meal for two (c.£6.37 per person); minimum £20 order.
- Limited recipe box range (12 weekly options) compared to Gousto's 175+; primarily two-person servings with limited large-family options.
- Single weekly delivery per area with no flexibility on day; order modification process described as cumbersome.
