Mindful Chef review: the premium, health-focused meal box
Our rating: 4/5 — the best-tasting, best-quality box we tried, if you're happy to pay a little more for it.
This week's menu · 2026-W35
28 recipes to choose from, 28 new this week. New additions lean High protein, Vegan, Pescatarian. Over the last 4 weeks, Mindful Chef adds around 91 new recipes a month.
What we like
- The food. Great-tasting recipes built on quality, free-range ingredients — this was one of the strongest boxes we tried for flavour.
- Portions. Generous — a two-person dish comfortably fed two adults and a child in our test.
- Freshness. Among the longest use-by dates of any box we've tried — the chicken in our box had five days on it, which gives you real flexibility over when you cook.
- Beyond meal kits. Alongside the recipes there's a range of ready meals, soups and frozen desserts — handy when you want something even quicker.
- Easy to use. The app is simple to sign up to and use, with filters for meat, fish, vegan and cooking time, plus calorie counts per meal.
What could be better
- Price. It's more expensive than most rivals, and the cost varies depending on which recipes you pick — the free-range sourcing is likely why.
- Menu size. Around 20 recipes a week when we tested — a great selection, but smaller than Gousto or HelloFresh.
- Prep times. Like every box we've reviewed, timings are optimistic — a 15-minute recipe took us 25.
- The odd slip. One dish in our box arrived missing its coriander — disappointing at this price, though delivery itself was on time and the packaging is mostly recyclable cardboard.

Trustpilot ≈ 4.4/5 from ~20,171 reviews (indicative — see the live score)
Mindful Chef holds the highest Trustpilot score among the major fresh-ingredient UK meal kits (4.4/5 from 20,000+ reviews), and was the first UK recipe box to achieve B Corp certification — later winning the 2024 King's Award for Sustainable Development. The premium it charges is significant: its two-person portion price is approximately 30–50% higher than Gousto's equivalent offering.
Reviewers praise
- Highest Trustpilot score among the major UK meal kits with fresh ingredients (4.4/5 from 20,000+ reviews); consistently cited across independent review sites as the quality leader.
- Every recipe is naturally gluten-free and dairy-free by default; 100% British, free-range chicken and high-welfare meat; no palm oil, refined carbs, or fillers.
- B Corp certified (first recipe box to certify, 2018; re-certified 2022 with score in top 3% of global food B Corps); recipient of the 2024 King's Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development.
Common gripes
- Significantly higher price than Gousto or HelloFresh — £10–11 per portion for a solo box, £6.25–6.75 for a two-person box, plus £5.99 delivery per order.
- Nestlé acquired a majority stake in 2020–2021, which may concern consumers prioritising independent or ethical ownership despite ongoing founder management.
- Smaller weekly menu (24–28 recipes) than Gousto or HelloFresh; cannot guarantee zero cross-contamination for severe allergies despite gluten-free recipes.
